Imagine being a mother of three in Sarasota, Florida and finding your 3 year old with swollen glands and a high fever. Imagine being diagnosed with a debilitating mental illness and not being able to adequately function enough to hold a job or communicate with friends and family without high priced prescription drugs. Imagine finding a suspicious lump in your breast, while you're making 15 thousand a year at full time work and have no health insurance. Where can you turn for costly antibiotics, other medications, and services?Genesis Health Services, Inc., was created by Jim McCloud in 1991 and formed as a non profit corporation in 1994 to serve the medically unserved and underserved in our community. The first target population was the HIV infected who were diagnosed with alcohol and other drug addictions and/or behavioral health illnesses. Since that time Genesis has continued to meet the needs of the community. Current programs used in this mission include Project Unity, a free HIV prevention program with emphasis on education, testing and outreach programs that target the high risk populations.
Genesis also works with the BEaR project that provides free mammograms and GYN exams. And the Genesis medical and dental clinic offers primary medical, dental, optical and behavioral health services to the uninsured on a free or reduced fee basis.
Genesis has many community partners that contribute to its success. The many volunteers that tirelessly work with Genesis are the glue that holds the organization together.
